Mia P. ’24 is one of the leaders of the Beyond Breck student organization, which is focused on providing education on consent and healthy relationships within the Breck Upper School. Breck is an independent pre-K-12 school in a suburb of Minneapolis.

What gave you the idea for the fundraiser?

After attending the Georgetown Day School Summit last November, I was inspired by the students and their passion for advocacy. I was fortunate enough to meet with the founders of I Have The Right To though the summit, and I wanted to help. I’ve always wanted to make my own photography prints, and I thoughts it would be a cool idea to sell them for SAAM (Sexual Assault Awareness Month). After some consideration, I decided to recruit other artists at my school to spread the word and join in the effort.

How did the fundraiser unfold from there?

Over spring break, I reached out to twelve talented student artists and invited them to donate their work for the fundraiser. Then, I built a website and published new products each week. I got creative with coupon codes, social media, and other fun tactics to circulate the website within my school community.

How was the fundraiser received?

Thankfully, our school had a lot of positive momentum with the existing work of Beyond Breck, which prompted widespread support for the fundraiser. Throughout my time leading the club, I’ve been continuously encouraged by out communities’ commitment to take part in difficult discussions about consent, culture, and healthy relationships. It was heartwarming to see the website come to life, as it created a platform to celebrate student artwork while simultaneously spreading awareness about sexual violence and raising funds for survivors.

How much did you raise?

We raised $1,300 to benefit three organizations with $450 going to I Have The Right To.

What words of encouragement do you have for survivors?

Gift yourself gratitude, healing, and compassion for how far you’ve come on your journey. If your cup is full, extend that love and compassion to your support system and your broader community.
