Be sure to check out 100 Million Strong: The Incredible Work of the I Have The Right To Organization (Breaking Silence: Season 3: Episode 1) wherever you get your podcasts!
Allison Meyhardt, the executive director of Breakingsilence.org has created an amazing podcast, Breaking Silence, which uses “the power of storytelling to create connection and healing” to help survivors and recovered perpetrators “come to terms with their experiences in a healing and revitalizing way.” The podcast offers three seasons of episodes, offering powerful perspectives, stories, and experiences.
Survivor parents Susan and Alex Prout, who co-founded I Have The Right To Org with their daughter, high school survivor, and activist Chessy Prout, sit down with Allison to discuss the work of their organization while touching on the many issues surrounding sexual assault in the high school and middle school sphere, including the lack of clearly defined consent in our laws.
100 Million Strong offers an insightful, powerful message, delving into the Prout family’s own story, and as Allison points out, their role in this work as “secondary survivors” – the loved ones who are in turn affected in the aftermath of sexual violence. Alex reminds listeners that if the community of sexual assault survivors is estimated to be 25 million by the Center for Disease Control, then the actual community affected by sexual violence, including family members and loved ones numbers at closer to 100 million! Allison also speaks to the dangerous cultural romanticization of one person being “in charge” in a relationship, verses relating as equals. It’s an episode you won’t want to miss!
